Bachchan refuses 1 crore fee from SRK

Thanks to the numerous ad films that Amitabh Bachchan has been featuring in over the years, his name has been turned into a lucrative business venture for brands wanting greater audience reach.

But here’s a generous nugget of information for cynics who think the Big B is a purely money-minded performer.

The lanky superstar, who became a phenomenon as the affable host of Star Plus’s Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC), recently declined adding another crore to his already bountiful affluence.

The Big B was recently approached by Shah Rukh Khan to do a guest appearance in his home production Paheli, and the hyper-busy Bachchan graciously accepted.

Directed by Amol Palekar, Paheli is based on the story by Vijaydan Detha titled Duvidha. The story is simple — a ghost falls in love with a bride whose merchant husband had gone away on business. As she is left alone, the ghost takes the husband’s place. What role the Big B has in this story is still to be seen when the film releases in June 2005.

Coming back to Bachchan, SRK was reportedly supposed to pay Rs 1 crore to Bachchan for his cameo role. Funnily enough, SRK forgot to sign the weighty cheque in his impatient zeal and gave it to Bachchan.

Bachchan, of course, declined to accept the fees and returned the 1 crore cheque to SRK with a hand-written note saying that he hadn’t acted in Paheli for money. He also wrote that one should never make the mistake of issuing an unsigned cheque!

Says Bachchan, “He gave me an envelope and flowers after the shoot and I thought it contained a thank you note. On reaching home, I found the cheque. I did the cameo role for emotional reasons, and emotions cannot be evaluated so I returned it back to him. I also noticed that it wasn’t signed and brought it to his notice.”

Saying it’s no big deal, Bachchan adds, “Actors do this all the time (not accepting money) for special reasons. It’s not the first time with me.”

No wonder then that Shah Rukh is completely bowled over by the Bachchan’s “priceless” gesture. The next time around, if AB ever needs the Khan’s involvement in any of his ventures, we can bet that the latter will happily proclaim “Main hoon na…!”
