Free Image Hosting by www.NetFreeHost.com

Mayuri made her entry into films with 'Kumbakonam Gopalu.' A very young thing with a pretty face. As she got more film opportunities, she also got more problems, including health problems. Overcoming all these, she starred in 'Whistle,' '18 Rainbow Colony,' and 'Manmadhan' as well as in the TV serial 'Salanam.' Having achieved all this, why did she take a drastic decision to end her life? It's to be mentioned that in the recently released 'Kanaa Kandein,' Mayuri had a small role.

Yesterday when everyone in her home had gone out, she hung herself with a sari from the ceiling fan.

Terrible stomach pain is cited as the reason for her extreme decision. But the police are also investigating if there is a love failure that could have led to this.

Mayuri was just 22 years old when she took her life.

Excerpts from an interview with Divya

Free Image Hosting by www.NetFreeHost.com

Divya was only 14, and had just attained womanhood in the physiological sense of the term, when she faced the movie camera for the first time. But who would say that she was not a full-blown woman when she acted in Vinayan's Kalyanasaugandhikam? The girl with a trace of the Sridevi features in the eyes, lip-corners and the long, graceful legs and arms, is a bit truant too. Talk to her to be convinced of that witty mind behind those large eyes.

First cast as the heroine of Dileep, the rising star of those years, she was welcomed by movie-watchers across Kerala for her stellar performance, in her first film Kalyanasaugandhikam itself.

Divya's rise was meteoric, and it really was cause for a lot of jealousy in the Malayalam tinsel world. Just note who came after her for the next project? None other than I V Sasi for his mega project Varnappakittu. And who was her hero? Star of the stars, Mohan Lal. That was a real start.

The tender girl was handling the characters with surprising ease and maturity. For example, her enchanting performance as a sari-clad village wife and lover, with a sea of pain in the soul. All the super stars demanded her as their heroine and that gave her a record of being cast against all the super stars in the shortest duration: just three years. Opposite Suresh Gopi in Pranayavarnangal, with Mamootty in Oru Maravathoor Kanavu, as Mukesh's heroine in Friends, in the role of Jayaram's beloved in Karunyam and opposite Manoj K Jayan in Bharatan's Churam! What more can a newcomer into the world of dream-merchants hope for in life?

And think of the versatility the young actress has. Opposite Lal in Varnappakittu she was a grief-stricken lover, wife and widow. In Pranayavarnangal she gave a stunning performance as a modern girl in tight jeans and colourful tops. In Churam she surprised even Bharatan, that great director who never is satisfied with a serious scene without ten re-takes, with her role as a poor village wife in the typical Kerala dress of mundu (dhoti) and blouse.

But success has not gone into Divya Unni's head. She is proud that she did things well. "She is practical," says her mother. "She is groomed that way. She is a mature person in this tender age itself," says Unnikrishnan her father. "She will never leave her first passion, dancing, which has brought her so many acclaims," adds the mother. "I will dance and look for a job. Films are not everything in life. You can't remain there for long. And I know, God will always be with me," says the star herself.

And God never stops blessing her. Divya has two grand projects on hand just now: Vinayan's Madampi and Suresh Babu's as-yet-untitled film opposite Mamootty.

Bollywood actors Salman Khan and Satish Shah, accused in the 1998 black buck poaching case, on Saturday appeared before a local court in Jodhpur and denied their involvement in the killing of protected wild animals.

Khan and Shah, who along with eight other co-accused appeared before Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Brijendra Kumar Jain, told the court they had not killed any protected animals on the night of September 26 and 27, 1998.

After hearing the statements of the accused the CJM fixed July 16 as the final date of hearing.

A case against Khan, Shah and eight others was registered in Mathania police station on a complaint by Bishnoi community accusing them of killing two black bucks during their visit to Jodhpur for shooting of a film.

The court fixed June 7 as the next date of hearing in another case of poaching of black bucks on September 28 and 29 in 1998, in which both Khan and Shah are accused.

The second case against the Bollywood actors was filed in Bhawad police outpost in 1998.

Rajinikanth in Chandramukhi

Free Image Hosting by www.NetFreeHost.com

Superstar Rajinikanth portraying Saravanan, the Psychiatrist weaves magic with his unmatched style and lively presence in Chandramukhi. His introduction, as usual, through a stunt sequence with special effects sets the right mood.

From start to finish the film moves at jet speed. Even the titles (done by Soundharya Rajinikanth's 'Ochre Animations') are appealing. Senthilnathan (Prabhu) and his wife Ganga (Jothika) buy a property which is supposed to be haunted. The palace belonged to the King Vettaiyan who had kidnapped a dancer Chandramukhi to satiate his desires.

On coming to know of her love for a fellow dancer, he killed the dancer in front of Chandramukhi's eyes and then burnt her alive. When Ganga comes to know about the story of Chandramukhi, she starts behaving like her. Many strange happenings take place in the house. Senthilnathan’s uncle (Nasser), his daughter Priya (Malavika), and his elder sister Akilalandeshwari (Sheela), along with Murugesh ( Vadivelu) who is Senthil’s cousin, come to stay in the Palace.

Saravanan (Rajinikanth) a psychiatrist comes to the rescue of Senthilnathan. He first identifies Durga (Nayantara), the granddaughter of the gardener (Vijayakumar), behind all the strange happenings in the house. Slowly the mental condition of Ganga starts getting worse; now Saravanan combines medical science with witchcraft to bring Ganga out of her mental state as Chandramukhi.

Rajinikanth is in his charismatic self. He is back in full form. It is however Jothika as Ganga, who steals the show. This film can be attributed to be her career's best. It will be no surprise if she bags a few well deserved awards for this movie.

Prabhu has given a noteworthy performance. Vadivelu provides an effective foil to Rajini in the comedy scenes. Nayantara as Durga fits the bill though she has a minor role in the film as the Super Star's love interest. She looks ravishing in song sequences.

Vineeth and Malavika provide the required elements for their characters. Seasoned artistes K R Vijaya, Sheela, Vijayakumar and Nasser play their parts with ease

Chandramukhi

In Tamil Nadu, there is only one superstar.

You needn't name him. If you say superstar, it is understood who you are referring to.

Any bit of news about the superstar, his films or political views is big news. Every word uttered by him, every expression of his is analysed threadbare and new meanings are deduced. Even his dialogues on screen are carefully studied and scrutinised.

Yes, I am talking about Rajnikanth.

The power and charisma of this man, clad in white with white hair and a white stubble is such that every time he announces a new film, the media goes wild with excitement. Of course, the amount of speculation and rumours that go with the announcement of each film of his is also unparalleled.

Rajni's last film Baba (2002) was made with much secrecy, like his earlier films. Unfortunately, the suspense before its release gave rise to a lot of speculation and expectation. And that went against the film because it could not live up to expectations.

The makers of Baba realised that only a good story and novel treatment could make a Rajni film a success. Rajni, in a magnificent gesture, compensated the distributors for their losses.

Last year, the actor announced that his next film would be Jaggu Bhai, and photographs of Rajni dressed up as Jaggu Bhai were circulated. But it did not progress beyond that.

Last week, it was heard that Rajni's new film will be launched soon, and it would not be Jaggu Bhai, but another film called Chandramukhi.

The 'story' that goes around is that Rajni, who was holidaying and meditating in Bangalore, happened to see a Kannada film that is running houseful -- Aaptamitra. It stars Vishnuvardhan and the late Soundarya (she died in an air accident while on a promotion tour for the BJP during the general election), and is said to be the remake of Fazil's Malayalam classic Manichitrathazhu.
The film is directed by P Vasu who had earlier directed three of Rajni's Tamil films -- Panakkaran, Uzhaippali and Mannan. All three were super hits.

The grapevine has it that Rajni, who was so impressed with Aaptamitra, wanted P Vasu to remake it in Tamil.

Enter Sivaji Productions, associated with the late thespian Sivaji Ganesan, planning its 50th film.
The 49th film from Sivaji Productions, Rajakumaran starring son Prabhu, was made way back in 1992. Due to various reasons, they had to wait for 12 long years to make their next film.

Rajni's Mannan was also a Sivaji production. Rajni had announced at the jubilee celebrations of Mannan, in Sivaji's presence that he would act in their 50th film.

And when Ram Kumar, Sivaji's elder son, contacted Rajni to discuss his starring in their 50th film, he had already seen Aaptamitra and talked to P Vasu. The cards fell in place, and Ram Kumar and Prabhu of Sivaji Productions decided to produce Chandramukhi, which will be directed by P Vasu.

The shooting of the film is scheduled to start on November 1, Ram Kumar said.

Fazil's Manichitrathazhu starring Mohanlal, Shobhana and Suresh Gopi is considered an 'evergreen' film. Even after a decade, the film is watched with great interest by the people of Kerala. The film had unadulterated and sophisticated comedy, great suspense, mystery, thrill, and above all, excellent performances.

Even though Shobhana won her first National Award for her performance as a schizophrenic in Manichitrathazhu, it was Mohanlal who won hearts. Mohanlal as Dr Sunny, an eccentric and very funny psychiatrist, was a delight to watch.

No wonder Rajni got excited about the character. In Manichitrathazhu, Mohanlal makes his appearance only minutes before the interval, but Chandramukhi will definitely be written with the superstar in mind, and with Manichitrathazhu only as the base.

If Chandramukhi is indeed inspired (indirectly) by Manichitrathazhu, the female character is extremely important. Names of Simran, Sneha and Reema Sen are going around. Prabhu is said to be doing the role enacted by Suresh Gopi, who was Shobhana's husband in the film.

The story of Manichitrathazhu takes place with a young couple, Ganga (Shobhana) and Nakulan (Suresh Gopi) arriving at the ancestral home of the latter. As a school girl, Ganga had grown up imbibing her grandmother's ghost stories in their ancestral home. She was transplanted to Kolkata after school. Her mind, which had forgotten all those stories suddenly comes alive when she and her husband came to live in his 'haunted' ancestral home. The story comes alive with Dr Sunny's arrival.

If Chandramukhi recreates the drama and sophistication of Manichitrathazhu, Rajni's new film may avoid the fate of Baba, and Sivaji Productions will have a winner in their hands.

Thaskaraveeran - Mammotty

Languge: Malayalam
Cast: Mammoty, Innocent, Janardanan, Rajan.P.Dev, Siddique, Rias Khan, Salim Kumar,Nayanthara,Sheela.
Director: Pramod-Pappan
Screenplay: Dennis Joseph
Producer: Vindyan and Dinan

Thaskaraveeran will be the next release for Mammotty after Thommanum Makkal.

Years ago two thieves- Peeli(Janardanan) and Itti(Spadikam George) migrated from Travancore. They brought up their sons kuttappan (Rajan.P.Dev) and Iippachan(Innocent) to be thieves. Kuttapan’s ten year old son Kochu Baby (Mammotty) sees his grandfather (Janardanan) being killed by Iippachan and runs away from home terrified.

Years passed, Iippachan became a rich man. Kochu Baby who ran away reaches Mumbai and after many years becomes an underworld don there. But all these while all he wanted was to take revenge on Iippachan and when the opportunity presented he returned to his village for that purpose.

In his village he had to deal with many unexpected happenings and people. One such person is egg-selling girl-Thankamani (Nayanthara) also Meenakshi (Sheela) who was the sweetheart of Peeli and is like a grandmother to Kochu Baby. Rest of the story deals with the clash between Kochu Baby and Iippachan.

Innocent plays a negative character after a long time (after film ‘keli’ with Jayaram). After playing a very likable father character to Mammotty in ‘Vesham’ it would be interesting to see how he can carry out the villain in this film. This is sure to challenge his acting skills.

This is Nayanthara’s first Malayalam film after she became popular nation wide for playing heroine in Rajanikanth’s tamil film ‘Chandramukhi’. She was last seen playing an ultra glamorous (by Malayalam film standards) role in Tamil film ‘Ayya’. After this film released a section of her fans were furious at her because her skin show was below dignity and beyond what any Malayalam film actress has done in the recent past in tamil. It would be interesting to see if her fans have forgiven her. Sheela plays yet another important character. Siddique, Rias Khan, Salim Kumar, Mohan Jose etc plays important roles.

Thaskaraveeran release stayed

Free Image Hosting by www.NetFreeHost.com

The Madras High Court has stayed the release of the Malayalam film Thaskaraveeran based on a petition filed by the film financier Pankaj Mehta. The financier stated that the producer Vindhayan had agreed to pay the finance last week but did not do so and deferred the release to the coming Friday (May 20th). But the financier learnt that moves were being made to release the film without paying the balance amount. The court ordered the stay of the release of the film.

The film has Mammootty and Nayantara in the lead and is directed by Pramod Pappan. This stay order would bring a situation whereby Mammootty's Rapaakal which is scheduled for release in the first week of June clashing with Thaskaraveeran, if the latter's problem are not solved before next Friday.
