Bachchan refuses 1 crore fee from SRK

Thanks to the numerous ad films that Amitabh Bachchan has been featuring in over the years, his name has been turned into a lucrative business venture for brands wanting greater audience reach.

But here’s a generous nugget of information for cynics who think the Big B is a purely money-minded performer.

The lanky superstar, who became a phenomenon as the affable host of Star Plus’s Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC), recently declined adding another crore to his already bountiful affluence.

The Big B was recently approached by Shah Rukh Khan to do a guest appearance in his home production Paheli, and the hyper-busy Bachchan graciously accepted.

Directed by Amol Palekar, Paheli is based on the story by Vijaydan Detha titled Duvidha. The story is simple — a ghost falls in love with a bride whose merchant husband had gone away on business. As she is left alone, the ghost takes the husband’s place. What role the Big B has in this story is still to be seen when the film releases in June 2005.

Coming back to Bachchan, SRK was reportedly supposed to pay Rs 1 crore to Bachchan for his cameo role. Funnily enough, SRK forgot to sign the weighty cheque in his impatient zeal and gave it to Bachchan.

Bachchan, of course, declined to accept the fees and returned the 1 crore cheque to SRK with a hand-written note saying that he hadn’t acted in Paheli for money. He also wrote that one should never make the mistake of issuing an unsigned cheque!

Says Bachchan, “He gave me an envelope and flowers after the shoot and I thought it contained a thank you note. On reaching home, I found the cheque. I did the cameo role for emotional reasons, and emotions cannot be evaluated so I returned it back to him. I also noticed that it wasn’t signed and brought it to his notice.”

Saying it’s no big deal, Bachchan adds, “Actors do this all the time (not accepting money) for special reasons. It’s not the first time with me.”

No wonder then that Shah Rukh is completely bowled over by the Bachchan’s “priceless” gesture. The next time around, if AB ever needs the Khan’s involvement in any of his ventures, we can bet that the latter will happily proclaim “Main hoon na…!”

Dileep scores a hit at last!

Image Hosted by BizHat.com Image Host

Young Malayalam actor Dileep is a much relieved man these days. The smile is back on the face of the hit-starved hero.

Well, the chubby-faced Dileep has at last succeeded in emerging out of a bad patch in his reel life. His latest movie "Kochirajavu" is doing well at the box office.

As a matter of fact, the buzz is that Kochirajavu is doing better than two other Malayalam films released on Vishu day.

That must well and truly ease the tension of Gopalakrishna Pillai, Dileep's real name!

Once again, comely Kavya Madhavan has come to the rescue of Dileep, who was desperate for a hit after a slew of flops.

Kavya with whom Dileep has given a number of hits including the blockbuster "Meesa Madhavan", has proved yet again to be Dileep's lucky mascot.

No wonder, the young actor is wearing a big smile these days. He can afford to relax now that he has given a hit after the failure of films like Rasikan, Kathapurushan.

Keep it up, Dileep and all strength to your elbow!

'Mumbai Xpress' shot in innovative style: Kamal

Kamal Haasan is happy with the way his "Mumbai Xpress" has turned out.

The film, releasing Friday, has a "very MTV ''grunge'' look that youngsters should find fashionable", says Kamal.

The film, says Kamal, "gave me the happiness of a grand meal shared with close friends... not because I cooked it. But because the cooks didn''t spoil the broth. The burp is awaited."

The film, a comedy, was shot in 50 days and has been made into Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

Kamal told that though the film was shot in an "innovative style", it was "not an experiment with audiences'' tastes".

He does not feel that the technique would in any way take away from the film. "Technique here is an icing on the cake, (it is) not the cake."

Are you happy with the end-result this time?

I hate to play my own PR. But basically "Mumbai Xpress" is a triumph of writing. I guess we can all pat ourselves for the screenplay without pretending to be humble. It was part of the team spirit that's conducive to creativity. And though it was tough shooting in the dust and grime we completed the film smoothly and in a very short while. And we've shot it in a very innovative style. It has a very MTV 'grunge' look which youngsters would find fashionable. And it works within the film's mood.

But fancy technique takes away from the story?

Maybe at times. Not in "Mumbai Xpress". Technique here is an icing on the cake, not the cake. We've done away with a lot of trappings. Those who've seen the film including my guru K. Balachander, liked it.

How has the year been for you?

Kind... That's the best way I can express it. Kind rather than cruel. Everything seems settled and calm in my life. That spirit shows in my new film "Mumbai Xpress". It lacks the tense wound-up spirit of "Virumandi" or the forced smiles of my comedies two years ago. The smiles and chuckles this time are real. Though actors are masters of concealment somewhere the player's personal pain communicates itself into his work and then to the audience.

Was it designed as a vehicle for you?

No! Not at all! I was very careful this time about that. "Mumbai Xpress" is not about Kamal Haasan. After a few reels you don't see Kamal Haasan, only the character. In fact, it's an ensemble piece where all my co-stars have well-accented roles. It's a team effort where I also got my fair share of meat. "Mumbai Xpress" is not an experiment with audiences' tastes; but with craft. We shot with a minimal crew who gave the film a new look but nothing bizarre. Earlier I'd have chosen this look for one of my more serious films like "Mahanadi" or "Anbesivam".

We've applied it to a comedy. It seems to have worked. Though all the characters are dead serious - and some of them, plain dead - it's still a funny film. We don't provide cue cards for laughter in "Mumbai Xpress". And yet trial audiences have compared with my 1990 comedy "Michael Madan Kamarajan" which isn't considered just a benchmark in my career but for comedy in our cinema.

So you classify "Mumbai Xpress" as a comedy?

With slight reservations... Comedy is considered slightly undignified in our cinema. Like my other comedy "Pushpak" with Singeetham Srinivasa Rao, "Mumbai Xpress" is also a trendsetter. Or so my peers tell me. Many times you think you're being funny when you're actually falling flat on your face. Not this time, though. My first ever production was meant to be directed by Singeetham Srinivasa Rao. We were supposed to remake a film called "Gol Mal". But someone else bought the rights in Tamil.

That's how I turned a writer, by default, in "Raja Parvai". I produced, wrote and played in the film. "Raja Parvai" wasn't a financial winner for me. It was my learning curve. I paid for the lesson I learnt.

So how market-friendly is "Mumbai Xpress"?

The box office is that oasis where all animals come to drink their water. Fortunately this time I've hit bull's eye with both the aesthetics and the commercialism. "Mumbai Xpress" is a joyous film. You don't feel you've just watched a funny caper. Also, I've made the film in three languages: Tamil, Hindi and Telugu.

There's also a Kannada star in the film.

Yes Ramesh Arvind, whom everyone will be talking about after "Mumbai Xpress". He has done extremely well in the film. We first thought of Tinu Anand for the role. But suddenly we thought we were falling into a comfort zone. We didn't want to repeat ourselves. Ramesh Arvind was playing the lead in Kannada films. He quickly changed his looks and agreed to do a role that many actors wouldn't see as an ideal launch in Hindi.

Ramesh is a writer like me. He understands the nuances of the part. His Hindi isn't perfect. That suits his character fine. We gave vernacular freedom to actors. All the actors behave naturally in all three languages. Some characters are in both the Hindi and Tamil versions - my leading lady Manisha Koirala, Ramesh Arvind, Sharad Saxena and the little boy Hardik. Saurabh Shukla too was meant to be in both versions. But his hands were too full. So we got another director-friend Santana Bharathi to play Saurabh's role in Tamil.

You shot all three versions simultaneously?

Yes, and we could have had a lot of ego hassles and politics on the sets. But when Om Puri shot for the Hindi version Nasser happily watched him while waiting to do the Tamil version, and vice versa. Vijay Raaz wanted to do certain scenes again after watching his Tamil counterpart do it. They all knew this film was an experiment in frugality and speed and they all co-operated.

Thanks to Saurabh Shukla, everything fell into place. He gave up another project to do "Mumbai Xpress". We both made the right decision. It's such a simple film, and that quality is so difficult to achieve. We finished the whole film in 50 days, over-shot by a few days because of my accident.

Did the accident prove a big setback?

Thankfully, no. When the mo'bike toppled over I thought I'd end up in the hospital for a long time. I was only worried for my 10-year-old co-star Hardik. There was not a scratch on him. I'd have been shattered if something happened to him. Very cruelly, the film would've been remembered for the accident.

Hardik is quite extraordinary!

We chose him out of 10 boys who auditioned. All of them with expectant smiles. I felt like a judge at a school debate. Very heartbreaking to say no to them. It's easy to say no to an adult. But how do you turn away a child? Hardik was by far the best.

Even after the accident he and his parents trusted me completely. He used to prompt Manishaji and even me about our Tamil lines. No one will believe he's a Gujarati. I've worked with children before. But Hardik was special. We were like siblings, hence creatively argumentative. A very well brought-up kid. The whole unit loved him. But he must hate them for pulling his cheeks all the time.

Is the film inspired by any foreign source?

No! Probably the spirit of Oscar Wilde hovers over the film... Speaking of Oscar, one day I hope we'll have an award which the foreigners will crave to have.

How does "Mumbai Xpress" compare with your other recent works?

Hard to say for me. But when the writing of "Mumbai Xpress" was complete I had felt the same satisfaction that I did after I wrote "Virumandi". I'm very happy with this work. Not that it would qualify among the great films of this century.

"Mumbai Xpress" gave me the happiness of a grand meal shared with close friends. It was a rare feast for me, not because I cooked it. But because the cooks didn't spoil the broth. The burp is awaited.

And trouble with the title again?

There has been trouble with the title, yes. But we've sorted it out. The government has assured me there'll be no trouble. The dissenters don't want an angrezi (English) word in the Hindi title.

INTERVIEW - Amitabh Bachchan wants Pakistan to host IIFA

By Paul Gallagher

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Bollywood screen idol Amitabh Bachchan urged India's huge film industry on Friday to consider staging a prestigious awards ceremony in Pakistan, as hopes of improved ties between the two nuclear rivals grow.

The veteran film star said he would ask the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) to consider holding its annual awards ceremony in Pakistan. He is a member of the IIFA's advisory board and the academy's global ambassador.

"I am a member of the advisory board and I would most certainly bring this up at some stage that we should hold an IIFA in Pakistan," said Bachchan, who has starred in 110 films and is an idol to Bollywood's hundreds of millions of followers.

The Indian film industry, which makes three times as many films a year as Hollywood, has captivated cinema goers around the world with its escapist musical extravaganzas.

Actors, producers and directors believe Bollywood, followed closely in Pakistan as well as India, has the power to help bring the divided countries closer together amid hopes of improved relations between the neighbours.

"An imaginary line is dividing two countries and creating a lot of hostility. We need to stop that. Everywhere in the world now barriers are being removed and people are coming together," Bachchan told Reuters in an interview.

The first bus service from Indian Kashmir to Pakistani Kashmir in more than half a century opened this week, the latest sign of thawing relations between New Delhi and Islamabad, who have fought two wars over the disputed territory.

EXCHANGE OF CULTURES

"I hope that we can, as a result of film making and exchange of culture and films and events, be able to propagate peace," he said on a visit to the Netherlands, which will host this year's IIFA awards ceremony in June.

South Africa and Singapore have also staged the event in the past few years.

Asked if it would be feasible for Indian film accolades to be handed out in Pakistan as early as next year, Bachchan replied: "Certainly. Why not? We'll certainly look into it. We can work towards that."

A Bollywood legend, he stars in a new film tipped by the Indian media as the country's best ever bet for a foreign film Oscar. The film "Black" is inspired by the life of legendary deaf and blind writer Helen Keller.

No Indian film has ever won an Oscar, although India turns out about 1,000 films in 12 languages every year. Nearly 80 percent of the dialogue in "Black" is in English.

"I think the concept of Oscars is for American cinema. I think they are gracious enough to include a category where they acknowledge cinema from other countries as well, India included.

"We haven't had the kind of recognition or perhaps have not made a product which is appreciated in the Oscars. But hopefully we will one day," Bachchan said.

"We can't expect to win all the awards in the Oscars. It's an English language medium and Hindi cinema is Hindi cinema, so it will have limitations."

Nedumudi Venu completes 25 years

Nedumudi Venu may have won only two National Awards (as supporting actor in His Highness Abdullah and a special jury award for Margam). But he is widely considered as one of the most versatile actors in India.

One of his admirers is Kamal Haasan who makes it a point to talk about Nedumudi's versatility and spontaneity in many of his interviews, and also give Nedumudi meaty roles in his films; Nedumudi otherwise sticks to Malayalam films. Even thespian Sivaji Ganesan was said to be an admirer of Nedumudi Venu's talent. They became close on the sets of the Malayalam film Yatramozhi, which had Sivaji and Mohanlal in the lead roles.

The biggest moment in Nedumudi Venu's career was going to Cannes as the lead actor in the film Arimbara (directed by Murali Nair).

While Mohanlal's silver jubilee in the film industry was a big event in Kerala, Nedumudi's 25 years was a quiet affair.

Srikkanth in Kana Kandein too

Image Hosted by BizHat.com Image Host

Srikkanth seemed to have it all to be a romantic hero. No wonder his entry through Rojakoottam was like lightning.

Though he could not reproduce the success later, he has been described as a safe hero. When he tried to move away from the romantic image in Bose, it was not accepted fully by filmgoers. He is once again back as a romantic hero in cinematographer K V Anand's first directorial venture Kana Kandein.

Then, he has Fazil's love story Oru Naal Oru Kanavu.

Will Selvaraghavan rescue Dhanush?

tamil Dhanush

Dhanush's big brother Selvaraghavan made him what he is today. Dhanush's first film, Thulluvatho Ilamai, directed by his brother (though the credit has been given to their father Kasturirajan) was a huge hit. It was followed by Kaadal Kondein which made Dhanush a sensation all over Tamil Nadu.

He became such a craze that his fans threw him in the air once to show their love and broke his arm!

His next film, Thiruda Thirudi, especially the song Manmada Rasa, created hysteria among youngsters. It appeared Dhanush, a thin, lean and not very pleasant looking fellow will be the next Rajnikanth. But it was not to be. All his films that came later were meaningless, and bombed at the box-office.

Meanwhile, Selvaraghavan made 7 G Rainbow Colony with newcomer Ravi Krishna, in both Tamil and Telugu. The film was a hit in both languages. Selvaraghavan's heroes are not supermen; they are as ordinary as the man on the street. No wonder audiences identified with his heroes. Dhanush made a mistake when he tried to be superman in his films.

It seemed that only his big brother could rescue Dhanush's career. Selvaraghavan, who was to shoot Oru Naal Oru Kanavu entirely in Mauritius, is getting ready to make a film titled Puduppettai in Tamil Nadu. Selvaraghavan's two favourites are associated with this film too -- cinematographer Aravind Krishna and music director Yuvan Shankar Raja.

Will he lift his kid brother's sagging career?

Interview with Meera Jasmine

Malayalam Meera Jasmine

Meera Jasmine is the flavour of the season in both Malayalam and Tamil.

The comely girl from Kerala is going places, as every producer wants to cast her in his movie. An intensely private person, Meera still seems to be a reluctant starlet.

We got up close with Meera and sought her views on things close to her heart.

Love - It is not what comes after seeing each other for just a couple of times. It is something more. It is about understanding. It is about sharing. It is about giving. It is about taking. It is about having one life in two bodies.

Dress - My choice has always been simple and down to earth. My favourite is pawadai and thavani (half saree). When I am at home in Kerala, this is the dress I wear. With sandal paste on my forehead and anklets on my feet, I feel very relaxed and comfortable.

Hobbies - Music is my first love. Especially the songs of Ilayaraja. They are so soulful. I always have a Walkman on my ears all the time. I am not into hard, rock songs. Melody is my cup of tea. I know lot of Ilayaraja songs by heart.

Favourite bathroom song - From Jana gana Mana to Jesus Christ hymns to Kanda Shashti Kvacham, I hum whatever comes to my mind.

Colour - I like all colours. White when at home, blue when going out, red for temples, green for special occasions, black for sorrow. I love to wear different colours for different occasions. But the truth is I don't have a colour sense.

Cellphone - I don't give my mobile number to anyone. In fact, I don't use my mobile that much. It is a hotline between my home and myself.

Superstition - I am not a very religious type. I believe in God. I worship Kollur Mookambikai. But I am not superstitious.

Lucky

Cast: Salman Khan, Sneha Ullal, Mithun Chakraborty, Vikram Gokhale, Ravi Baswani, Navnee Parihar, Kader Khan
Director: Radhia Rao and Vinay Sapru

Love is a grave matter in "Lucky - No Time For Love". A lot of the romance between 40-year-old Salman Khan and 19-year-old Sneha Ullal takes place in a Russian graveyard as riots break out all over a city.

Riot on! Gabriel Gracia Marquez got there first in "Love During The Time Of Cholera". Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru's sweet but finally unproductive concoction is a let down.

Sure, the film looks good with Sudeep Chatterjee's cinematography capturing a sweeping arch of violence over the snow-capped landscape.

It even sounds good. But it has no heart.

It pretends hard, but finally ends up being as inspiring as a Valentine's Day card bought from a posh departmental store.

There's a skin-deep aesthetic appeal to the presentation, contoured and accentuated by Adnan Sami's dreamy songs and Monty's background music.

But the film is finally felled by its own wispiness.

Efforts to imbue an epic grandeur to the romance - especially towards the end with sequences of a snow-stormed train taking away truckloads of migrants that almost mimics Steven Spielberg's "Schindler's List" - fail for the lack of a grounded premise.

The plot should have been about a schoolgirl's crush on an older man. It should have been akin to Hrishikesh Mukherjee's "Guddi". Instead, it goes into the echoes of Yash Chopra's "Lamhe" where a girl old enough to be a daughter woos and finally wins the middle-aged hero.

With Salman Khan looking 35-plus and the girl heartbreakingly vulnerable and callow, the film chooses to turn the initial crush into a passionate man-woman affair.

The premise of a schoolgirl falling in love with an old man escorting her through a troubled hinterland is exciting. But that the man should reciprocate her feelings is a bit hard to digest.

Beautifully mounted, but vacuous at heart, "Lucky..." is one of those could-have-been films that stops short before the journey gathers momentum.

Milap Jhaveri's dialogues depend more on Salman Khan's cocky image than the inherent romantic overtures of the theme.

"If I eat any more I'd end up like Adnan Saami," quips Khan. And when in the graveyard the schoolgirl lisps, "I'm not that type of a girl," Khan guffaws, "I've heard that line before".

Trouble is, all the lines and emotions associated with Salman Khan's romantic image here are transposed into a gawky alliance with a girl who doesn't know any better, and a man who should.
"Lucky..." simply lets the man and the woman trudge though snow and fluff until we feel enough is enough.

Mithun Chakraborty's prolonged efforts to play a cop and charlatan with a penchant for mouthing cinematic clichés falls short of expectations. The rest of the cast is marginalized by ill-written roles.

"Lucky..." isn't without assets.

It wears a polished look and exudes a glittering grandiosity. The song "Shayad Yehi To Pyar Hai" lends music to the film's soul. But it comes too late.

Meera's kiss looks very natural

The controversial kissing scene in "Nazar" may well have generated an extraordinary pre-release hype, but there is much more to the film - its very special special effects.

Special effects expert Wilson Louis, who worked on the film, says he liked the way it was shot.

"It has a very intriguing story-line, which keeps you riveted on the screen. The film revolves around the story of a woman who can foresee things well in advance, which is where the special effects come into place." Louis reveals.

So what did he feel about Pakistani actress Meera's controversial kissing scene? "Nothing controversial about it. In fact, it gave the impression of being a natural sequence in the film," he said.

But this natural sequence is not going very well with the people back home for Meera.

Local news channels in Pakistan repeatedly flashed snippets of the movie where Ashmit leans toward Meera, their lips coming closer, she letting out a heavy sigh. But then, since censors do not permit a kiss to be shown on Pakistani television, the picture turns fuzzy and the rest is left to the imagination.

Conservative Islamists are incensed at the thought of a Muslim woman kissing a Hindu. Some have called for an apology; others have filed a lawsuit, demanding that she be censured for an "immoral scene" -- it is unclear what the court could do if it agreed -- and still others have issued death threats.

However the Lollywood babe has defended her role and said there were no obscene scenes of her in the film, which is yet to be released.

She also said that claims of the obscene scenes were far-fetched as none of the critics had yet watched the film and that not even a single still of the movie has been released.

Says Meera: "The scene is just a suggestion shot. There is no kissing shot in the film and it is not a vulgar movie."

Feeling "sick" of all the criticism from Pakistan, Meera has decided to extend her stay in India and has rented a home in Mumbai. She has also drawn up plans to work in other Bollywood movies.

Speaking about Nazar, Meera saya: "I wanted to make history by working in a Bollywood film because never before has cinema in the two countries come together in such a big way. The producer is trying his best to get the government's permission to also release the film in Pakistan."

Achuvinte Amma

Director: Satyan Anthikkad
Producer: P.V.Gangadharan
Cinematographer: Azhagappan
Cast: Urvashi, Meera Jasmine, KPAC Lalitha, Oduvil unnikrishnan etc.

Image Hosted by BizHat.com Image Host

Satyan Anthikkad, had a casting coup when he was able to pair Urvashi, one of the finest actress of Malayalam who was on hibernation from the scene along with Meera Jasmine the current flavour in Achuvinte Amma. Satyan has succeeded in bringing out the bond between a young mother and her 20-year-old daughter effectively in the first half and laced it with some hilarious moments. But post interval, the story loses its track and the script goes haywire.

Still Achuvinte Amma is entertaining and has a message to say- “A person cannot change the evils within the society. But he/she can bring about a change by helping another person in distress”. The highlight of the film is Urvashi who has a tailor made role which has tapped her comedy timing and acting capabilities to the maximum. Not far behind is Meera who is vulnerable and looks cute.

Vanaja (Urvashi) is a self-made woman living with her only daughter Achu (Meera). Vanaja is a sweet talker and is a ‘Crorepati’ LIC agent. She is also good at a lot of things including tailoring. Her best friend is Achu and they share a special bond and share everything under the sun. But there is only one thing that Achu will not ask her and Vanaja does not like to speak about. This is about Achu’s father and whenever an embarrassing moment comes either of them end up escaping by telling a lie!

Vanaja loves her daughter so much that she is a little possessive about her and does not like even friends giving her gifts. Achu is an Engineering diploma and she gets a job in a construction company. The mother and daughter meet Jijo (Sunil) accidentally a few times and they are impressed by his go-gooder nature and understand that he is a very enterprising young man.

Soon Achu and Jijo become good friends and later lovers. However Vanaja disapproves their marriage as Jijo is an orphan. Achu leaves home when her mother refuses to tell her the name of her father? Achu stays with her friend and refuses to go back till Vanaja tells her about her father which forms the twist in the climax.

The major problem with the climax is that it is neither impressive nor gripping. On the other hand it tests your patience and drags a bit. Too many characters like a huge Muslim family, song and dances, a loud KPAC Lalitha’s character- all this mars the tempo as they have nothing to do with the narrative.

The comedy in first half between the mother and daughter is hilarious especially the scene when an illiterate Vanaja tries to speak in English! The police Sub Inspector Pillai (Sreekumar) with his Trivandrum lingo bring the house down. But the film is too lengthy (2 hrs ad 35 min) and needs trimming to make it more racy. Ilayaraja’s music does not create any impact.

Urvashi as Vanaja is a real treat to watch. She is in top form as a woman torn by dualities of her existence; she has reiterated the fact that she is a wonderful actress. Her comedy timings, in the first half and the poignant expressions in the climax are heartbreaking. Meera Jasmine has done a neat job as Achu and she looks cute and slim. Sunil as Jijo is a revelation and looks promising. Though Achuvinte Amma has some flaws in its story telling method, that mars the tempo, the film is recommended for the sake of the one woman dynamo called Urvashi.

Udayananu Tharam - Mohanlal, Srinivasan, Meena, Mukesh, Jagathy

Udayananu Tharam
Language: MALAYALAM
Director: Roshan Andrew
Cast: Mohanlal, Srinivasan, Meena, Mukesh, Jagathy
Music: Deepak Dev
Lyrics: Kaithapram
Cinematography: S.Kumar
Screenplay: Sreenivasan

Image Hosted by BizHat.com Image Host

When scriptwriter Sreenivasan is in form - it's a treat. It's a greater joy when he garnishes his writing with a superlative performance as an actor.

"Udayananu Tharam", directed by debutant Roshan Andrews, has the trademark Sreenivasan touch: a telling insight into the subject and a self-deprecatory humour.

Agreed that this is megastar Mohanlal's film, but it has Sreenivasan stamped all over it. "Udayananu Tharam" is a scathing commentary on life in the Malayalam film industry where quality is at a nadir because of the superstar craze.

Directors and scriptwriters, who once ruled the roost, are relegated to the background as films are made to suit stars' images and their cronies' whims.

The film is about an assistant director, Udayabhanu (Mohanlal), struggling to make a mark as a writer-director. Sreenivasan plays Rajappan Thengamoodu, a struggling actor, who steals and sells Udayan's script to a top producer on condition that he will play the hero.

Rajappan becomes superstar Saroj Kumar on the strength of Udayan's story. The scriptwriter, on the other hand, is shattered.

The dim-witted Saroj Kumar, aided by his manager Phachallam Bhasi (Jagathy Sreekumar), manipulates others to sustain his stardom.

Ironically, Udayan gets his first break on the condition that Saroj Kumar will be the film's hero.

Sreenivasan has peppered the story with real life incidents. He does not spare the two reigning superstars of Malayalam cinema, Mammootty and Mohanlal, even though the latter is the film's hero.

Udayan's character seems to have been inspired by Blessy, who had struggled as an assistant director for two decades before making a remarkable debut with "Kazhcha" last year.

Sreenivasan is perhaps a little late in tackling this subject. Last year has seen some sanity creeping back into the Malayalam film industry, although it is still to free itself from the clutches of the two ageing superstars.

Mohanlal gives a restrained and dependable performance as Udayan. But it is Sreenivasan who steals the thunder with his over-the-top act as the megalomaniac superstar.

The supporting cast, consisting of Mukesh, Jagathy Sreekumar and Salim Kumar, have done well. But the much-hyped cameo by director Lohithadas as director Prathap is quite lacklustre.

Meena makes a mark as starlet Madhumathi, who marries Udayan. Later they separate and she goes on to become a huge draw in other southern film industries. Does her character remind us of Meera Jasmine?

Deepak Dev's music fits the subject well. The film-within-a-film concept is handled deftly by debutant Roshan Andrews. He does not resort to any unnecessary gimmicks or spoofs that the theme could easily have inspired.

V.K.Prakash, the ad film maker and connoisseur of good cinema who made a few off-beat film including the musical, Mulavalliyum Thenmavum which flopped is now coming with an all out action movie titled Police with real life brothers Pritviraj and Indrajeet in the lead.

Police is about two cops, who have different style of functioning and are bitter enemies. But they have to tolerate each other and work together after being framed by the bad guys and now their mission is to clear their names.

The film is said to be a rip-off of that Sylvester Stallone Kurt Russel film Tango and Cash. Imagine our puny Pritvi playing Sylvester Stallone and Indrajeet in a fine actor like Kurt Russel’s role? Now we know why the audiences of Kerala prefer Mammootty and Mohanlal to these pretenders!

Annorikkal disappoints despite dusky Kavya

Producer: Kottarathil Thambi
Director: Sarathchandran Wayanad
Cast: Kavya Madhavan, Sunil Kumar, Kalabhavan Mani, Murali
Music: Kaithapram Vishwanathan

Image Hosted by BizHat.com Image Host

Yet another director makes his debut in Malayalam cinema. Sarathchandran Wayanad (who has been an assistant to Lal Jose) has come out with "Annorikkal", which boasts of Kavya Madhavan in dusky makeup and leaves you with mixed feelings.

The director, surely, has a grip on cinematic techniques, but he is low on content as far as the story department is concerned.

The story is about Ponnu (Kavya Madhavan), a typical self-made village girl who has survived odds after her father's murder when she was just a kid. A vivacious girl with a mind of her own, she does everything under the sun -- from rearing goats, milking cows to gathering firewood and cow dung in order to repay her father's debts. An interesting character, but the director seems to be out of ideas to develop a credible plot around her.

So he fills the surroundings with stereotypes: villainous Tamil moneylender Pandi (Kalabhavan Mani), a deceptive father figure and film-crazy lover-boy Benny (Sunil Kumar).

Pandi has an eye on Ponnu. He employs the age-old tactic of moneylenders and a debt trap to get her. He is assisted in this by Vijayaraghavan (Ponnu's father's buddy). Benny comes to her rescue and kills Pandi's brother after a languorous fist fight just before the interval.

After that, everything goes haywire. The focus seems to shift to the jail, where lover-boy is undergoing rigorous imprisonment for six years on charges of murder. We are shown the atrocities suffered by him at the hands of jail warden and his cellmates who are hardcore criminals, and how he fights injustices in elaborate detail.

In the histrionics department, Kavya tries to do her best and succeeds in doing so to a great extent, but we wish her character were more rounded and rooted. The inspiration must have come from the couple of strong rural characters portrayed by Manju Warrier in the last decade. The much-hyped makeup is inconsistent and disappointing.

Sunil Kumar impresses with a sincere performance as Benny. It proves that his showing in the recently released "Achuvinte Amma" was not a flash in the pan. He is here to stay.

Of the supporting cast, National Award winner Murali is wasted as Benny's father. Others, including Kalabhavan Mani, Mala Arvindan and Vijayaraghavan, seem to perform without any involvement.

"Annorikkal" is worth watching once. But don't walk into the theatre with the hope that the film will deliver on the promise of its pre-release promotion.

Aishwarya Rai lied about Oscars

A few days before the Oscar awards ceremony, news surfaced that the committee had invited Aishwarya Rai to present one of the awards for the winners. Many Indian viewers eagerly watched the telecast to see Aishwarya Rai on the stage but, they were disappointed.

The Oscar committee had clarified that the list of presenters is ready at least two months before the show. The committee has also said that it doesn't resort to last-minute changes. Finally, they have added that they never invited Aishwarya Rai for the ceremony at all!!!

After some investigations here in the local media, the truth is now out that the actress herself had started those lies, like all those stories about her Hollywood films.

Why Aishwarya, why?

Kunchacko Boban Wedding

Film actor Kunchacko Boban got married to Priya Anne, a native of Thiruvananthapuram, at Little Flower Church, near Elamkulam, here today. Several film actors participated in a reception held at Hotel Sarovaram in the evening.

Snehithan - Kunchacko Boban, Nandana

Language: MALAYALAM
Director:Jose Thomas
Cast: Kunchacko Boban, Nandana, Krishna, Preethi Vijayakumar
Music : Mohan Sithara

Snehithan is yet another weak and undernourished love story , well deserve to be a flop .If at all there's any silver lining,is that of fairly hummable music of Mohan Sithara. It tells the story of two pair of lovers. Malavika(Nandana) who is in love with Anand(Krishna) and Joji(Kunchacko Boban) with Ann Marry alias Anu (Preethy Vijayakumar).

The story begins in a register office where Malavika (Nandana) waits for her lover Anand(Krishna) to come and register their marriage. She is accompanied by photographer Joji (Kunchako Boban) to cover the function. But when Anand does not turn up Malavika is forced to go with Joji. Taking sympathy on her, Joji helps her to get a hotel room, which leads to more trouble for them. Cops arrest them during a raid in the hotel and Joji’s girlfriend Anu (Preetha Vijayakumar) comes to know about this. To make things worse Joji lies to the police that Malavka is his wife and they are let free. Malavika’s parents come to know about their daughter’s secret marriage and take the couple home creating more twist in the tale.

There is nothing remarkable in the film. Boban as Jijo is charming, while Krishna, Preethi Vijayakumar and the new girl Nandana are just ok. The highlight of the film are the songs written by Yusuf Ali Kechery set to tune by Mohan Sithara, though one of them is exact copy of A.R Rahman's 'Kannathil Muthamittal'. The film makes it clear that director Jose Thomas has to go a long way to become a successful movie maker.
